United Church of Christ...or are they...
Now, having spent a large portion of my youth in a U.C.C. congregation (when we got fed up with the Baptists, this is where we went), I must admit they are a faily innocuous sect of Christianity. As the St. James U.C.C. of Limerick, PA, points out, they're even a fairly progressive church.
However, their tag line, Luke 4:7, is a bit of an odd choice, even in terms of being progressive. The quote reads "If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine." (Luke 4:7, KJV). Sounds good, however, when you consider it in relation to the previous quotes:
And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. - Luke 4:5-8, KJV.
That's right, those are actually the words of Satan or the devil. Now, as a member of the Religious Society of Friends, I'm all for progressive churches dealing with outmoded belief systems in new and vital ways. However, I think even I have to call shenanigans on this one.
Stumbled across this reading The Consumerist this morning. What this particular story has to do with consumer's rights I'll never know, but it did give me a chuckle.
